Should I Aerate My Lawn?

Two common issues that can diminish the health and visual appeal of a lawn are soil compaction and the buildup of a thick thatch layer. Both of these problems hinder water and oxygen availability in the upper soil layers, impede water infiltration, restrict root growth, and increase the turfgrass’s vulnerability to pests and diseases.

Core aeration is a technique designed to alleviate compaction and manage thatch buildup, ultimately contributing to a more vibrant and healthy lawn.

It’s important to note that core aeration differs from power raking (dethatching) and spiking (using drum rollers with solid tines). A core aerator employs hollow tines to extract small soil plugs while moving across the lawn. This process creates air pockets in the soil and deposits soil residue on the surface, which helps in breaking down thatch. This method is far more effective in addressing both compaction and thatch compared to power raking or spiking. Contact us for an estimate for lawn aeration.
